2013 Face Favorites

Olay Professional Pro-X facial cleansing system
Like many women in America at the moment, I have been lusting over the $200 Clarisonic Mia cleansing system.  However, I refuse to drop $200 on a facial cleansing brush!  My mom has been using this Olay Pro-X cleansing brush for three years now and absolutely adores it.  Since she has the most gorgeous skin ever, I decided to give it a go.  At $29.99, this brush is an amazing deal.  It comes with one cleansing brush attachment, the hand piece, and a small Pro-X facial cleanser to get you started.  Using any face wash, squirt a few dabs of product on top of the brush, wet the bristles, wet your face, and turn the cleansing system on.  Depending on your preference, there is a low speed rotation or a high speed rotation.  I can see the disgusting dirt from my face on the top of the brush bristles!  Not to mention it feels really nice.  I noticed within the first two uses that my uneven, bumpy skin imperfections were going away.  My face feels cleaner throughout the day and I have noticed that my face is less oily.  I am in looooove!

Olay Pore Minimizing Cleanser + Scrub
I have been using this cleanser for years.  There are ribbons of micro-fine exfoliating beads, and ribbons of silky hydrating wash.  My face feels amazingly clean, smooth and refreshed after using this product, it smells nice, and it's reasonable in price.

Olay Night of Olay Firming Cream
Yes, I am 21 years old and use a firming cream.  Using this product right before you go to bed can help increase elasticity that is either lost from sun exposure, aging, or both, and definitely increases the moisture in your skin.  This product is so thick and creamy, you don't have to use much. Once your skin absorbs the cream, I noticed I don't feel oily or feel that I'm wearing any face lotion.  Great stuff.

 Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer
Aveeno has a great range of products, and I really fell in love with this one when I used it at my cousin's a few years ago.  I use this as my daily moisturizer since it has SPF, and helps brighten and correct your skin tone.  Whenever I apply my make-up after letting this lotion soak in, my complexion looks incredibly creamy and matte. Most major drugstores make their own copy cat version of this product and it works just as well!

Freeman Avocado & Oatmeal Facial Clay Mask
Cheap and effective, there's no reason to purchase pricey face masks.  Depending on how oily your skin is, use this once to twice a week to draw out impurities, dirt and oil from your pores.  I love how it makes my skin feel so soft and look creamy.  Make sure you use a moisturizer afterwards, to avoid your skin from producing more natural oils to compensate for what the mask has drawn out.  Too much oil = breakout!

100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream
After working all day, going to class, coming home and working on homework, I don't sleep as much as I'd like to.  I've noticed I am beginning to get circles under my eyes, and it is not an attractive look!  This eye cream is velvety and smells like a latte!  I noticed improvement in the texture and hue of my under eye skin within two to three days.

Ready to Wear Baked for Beauty Translucent Self Correcting Powder
This is another product my mom got me into.  I have extremely fair skin with pink undertones.  I have tried using a bronzer to make my skin glow, but I'm just too light that it's typically overpowering to wear one.  This powder is my absolute favorite.  It has several different shades to help correct your skin's flaws while giving you a healthy glow.  This is by far my favorite base to start my make-up routine with.  Using a large, fluffy kabuki brush, it takes me about one minute to achieve great looking skin.

Zia Threading eyebrow powder in medium dark brown
Having your eyebrows well taken care of makes a huge difference in your appearance.  I like to get mine threaded and darken them with a light dusting of eyebrow powder to make them more defined.

Physician's Formula Powder Palette in Blushing Rose
I love, love, love this color.  A little goes a long way.  One tin of blush lasts me about a year, sometimes longer.  Using a blush brush, I like to dust my cheek bones, and blend the color into my temples to make it appear natural.  Also, a quick swipe on your nose is a cute touch.

Weekend Rewind: Spring Break 2013

My darling mother came into town from Vegas last Thursday for the weekend, and we had a blast!

We went out to dinner with my in-laws at El Kiosco in Rialto the first night my mom was in town.  The second night, mom cooked homemade oven fried chicken with mashed potatoes that had real butter and cream, mixed veggies and a salad with apple chunks.  After dinner, the girls (mom, mother-in-law and myself), went to a local dive bar near my work called The Rustic Inn.  We had a few drinks and girl talk, and headed back home.

The next day, Saturday, was a perfect day from beginning to end.  Mom and I headed to my work to meet my co-workers and see the area.  Afterwards, we were on our way to downtown Redlands.  Having worked near downtown Redlands, I knew there was a lot of great shopping around, but I had never taken a day to explore and shop.  Boy, did we shop!  We were in Redlands from 10:20 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.  We went inside clothing boutiques, antique shops, a dog specialty store, and a wonderful place called Mozart's Fine Gifts.  This place has everything from Crabtree and Evelyn gifts, to crochet throws, to cookbooks, to jewlery, to tea.  This is a place everyone woman needs to shop once in their lifetime.  I also found a neat little local bakery that is very reasonable.  I purchased two loaves of homemade bread: raspberry and 11 grain apple cinnamon.  I paid about $5.00 a loaf for specialty bakery bread that I am in love with!  As my mother said, "You can't make it for that price!"  The Muffin Top bakery specializes in gourmet bread and pastries.  Their large cupcake are only $1.50 each.  I am in love with this place!

Muffin Top Bakery in downtown Redlands bakes a fresh assortment of breads and pastries.  Click to enlarge.

After shopping, we made our way over to State Street Winery for my first ever wine tasting.  We were given five samples of wine that the winery themselves make for $6.00 a person.  It's a creative, cheap date idea!  We tried two white wines, two red wines, and a Chardonnay.  The Chardonnay was so delicious!  The aroma and taste were very rich and buttery.  Mom and I both ended up bringing home a bottle of that one, called the Bella Bianco.  With bags full of goodies and empty bellies, we ate at Romano's Italian Restaurant.  Mom ordered a thin crust pizza and I had a cheeseburger.  Yes, I had a cheeseburger at an Italian restaurant and it was delicious!  Since Trader Joe's was in the same shopping center, we had to stop there.  I ended up with some delicious molten lava cakes and some fruit and veggies.  We headed home and enjoyed everyone's company with lots of coffee.

State Street Winery in downtown Redlands lets you taste test five different wines for only $6.00 per person!

The following day we relaxed and watched Nascar until 2:00, when I drove mom to Ontario airport.  Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you how annoyed I got when my Garmin continued to steer me in the wrong direction after we exited the freeway.  I wanted to get mom to her plane on time, and give her some time to relax.  Getting lost?!  AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FO' THAT!  Luckily, mom's phone GPS got us on the correct path to the airport.  We said our goodbyes and noted that getting back to our normal schedules was going to suck after having such a fun weekend together.

Emergency Root Canals are AMAZING

One of my bottom molars had crumbled on me while driving to find a wedding dress in late 2012.  Yes. . .a piece of tooth crumbled off from the rest!  I immediately went to the dentist and was told that I would "probably" need to go to a specialist to get a root canal.  Although I had taken off of work to go to this dentist, he refused to inspect the rest of mouth as I had asked him to.

Feeling irritated, I decided I would go to another dentist for a second opinion.  Between work, school, and the wedding, my schedule was crammed full.  I didn't make it to my secondary opinion dentist until now . . .as an emergency visit.  I had waited too long, and the decay in my crumbled tooth made its way toward the pulp chamber.

I felt a sharp, throbbing, constant pain from my tooth, through my jaw and up to my ear.  It felt like I had a raging ear infection on top of what was going on in my mouth.  The first night I struggled to fall asleep for over three hours.  The pain was nagging and brutal, so I decided to take an ibuprofen.  Eventually the pain subsided and I fell asleep.  The next day, I was popping ibuprofen every couple of hours.  The pain was intolerable, and what was worse is that the ibuprofen wouldn't work like it had for me the first night.  I flushed out the tooth with warm water, curious if it were irritated because I had a particle of food stuck inside the crack.  I stood on my head because the rush of blood made my tooth and jaw feel better.  There was a point where I burrowed my head in my hands and cried because it hurt so bad.  I had never been in so much pain in my short 21 years of living.  Since it was the weekend, I could do nothing but wait it out or go to the emergency room.

As soon as the dentist office opened on Monday, I called before the phone lines were even open.  Upon getting a hold of someone, they booked me as a walk-in with no appointment since they were full that day.  The waiting room was packed as I walked in, but I was admitted quickly.  A dental hygienist took x-rays of my teeth and also fully cleaned them.  After slapping my hands for not flossing, and being sent on my way with a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste, I made my way down to the specialist area to take care of my root canal.

Was I scared?  No.  I was in so much pain I didn't care how they went about making my tooth feel better.  I also researched the procedure, and heard that getting a root canal was easier than getting a cavity filled.  The endodontist (root canal specialist) numbed me up and I was ready to go!  I wore a pair of sunglasses to keep the focus light out of my eyes, and had to clamp down on a rubber barrier to keep my mouth open.  After that, the dental assistant placed a rubber dam in my mouth to isolate my tooth for the root canal.  And then the drilling began!  The dentist was drilling my tooth while looking through a bizarre dental microscope.  After she hollowed out my tooth, she began filing the roots to remove them.  Then she packed my tooth with rubber material, melted it into my canals, and temporarily sealed my tooth until I got my crown in two weeks.

I didn't feel a thing they were doing to me.  I was actually rather interested in what was going on.   From start to finish, it took the specialist less than 30 minutes, which gave me enough time to scurry back home, get my backpack and leave for class that evening.  After the numbing effects had eluded me, I felt no pain whatsoever.  Even though I was told to take ibuprofen should I experience any pain, I still haven't had to take a single one, and it's been almost 5 days since the procedure.  I had no swelling or aching, either.  I figure I am pretty lucky and handle surgeries well, or root canals aren't so bad after all.

After being in such intense pain for over 48 hours, I felt so blessed to have that root canal.  The surgery itself was a heaven sent.  My wallet disagrees, even though I have great dental insurance.

Ladies and gentlemen, brush and floss those pearly whites daily to avoid the pain prior to a root canal surgery, and the financial responsibility afterward.  Oh, and the $25.00 per tube prescription fluoride toothpaste, too.

Purge Your Body of Toxins

Before I met my husband, I ate on a strict schedule and I worked out at minimum an hour per day for six days a week.

When I moved to California from Las Vegas to be with my boyfriend at the time (who is now my lovely husband), I left everything I knew behind.  I lived in Vegas for 17 years of my life, and thus it's where I grew up and called home.  Family, my best friend, college I attended, familiar faces and streets, my favorite places. . .it was all gone when I went to California.  I recall feeling stressed, and my health routine suffered.  After losing 50 pounds, I had actually fallen out of my fitness routine.

Here I am a few years down the road, proud to have a job that keeps me very active and allows me to do what I love, going back to college, and married to the only person I could ever imagine myself growing old with.  I'm ready to get my body back to its healthiest state.

I sincerely love going to college.  Call me crazy, call me what you may.  There's such a variety of courses that you can participate in.  I signed up for a class called "Physical Fitness" this semester, which began on Tuesday this week.  Physical fitness classes concentrate on building your strength, endurance, and flexibility.  Attending a class with about 40 other people and pumping iron is an amazing feeling.  You've got so much motivation from your classmates!  Being in this class got me thinking: it's been a while since my body has felt this healthy, how else can I help my body to get back to the state it was in?

I was familiar with the idea of fasting, but never wanted to take part in it until I learned that it was a form of getting rid of built up toxins in your body.  I have been thinking about doing a fast that was healthy, made sense, and lasted long enough to kickstart my kidneys into a super filtration system.  I have decided to do a three day juicing fast.  Although I'm currently in the research state, I would love to share my daily thoughts and feelings with you while I am on my fast.

Has anyone done a juice fast themselves, or knows of someone who has?  Share your experiences, I'd love to hear!

Eating Your Way Skinny

When I was training for the military, I went from 185 pounds down to 130 pounds.  I had never felt so wonderful in my life.  I had more energy, I felt happier, and I looked forward to eating because I felt my body being nourished by the healthy lifestyle I had adapted.

Friends and family constantly asked how I achieved my goal.  I want to share my steps to success, because it's important to achieve a personal wellness level that makes you feel great.  Here's how I did it without trying any of those fad diets. . .

Schedule your day
It only takes three weeks for you to make or break a habit.  To help you stay in track of your goals, write down in a notebook or agenda what you plan to have for your three main meals, your snacks, and what kind of physical activity you plan to do for that day.  I got into the habit of eating breakfast when I woke up, exercised about two hours later, ate a snack right after exercising, ate lunch, then a snack, dinner, and either a small dessert if I craved it, or a light snack.  I allowed myself to drink a few cups of coffee and one other non-water beverage, such as juice or milk up until lunch time.  After lunch, I strictly drank water.  Also, do not eat anything two hours before you go to bed.  Your body is trying to wind down when you enter a state of sleep, but your stomach requires more blood flow to digest the content that is left inside of it.  Going to bed with food in your belly is very unhealthy.

Mind the food pyramid
You can click on the image above to make it larger for easier viewing.
You need a variety of foods to keep your body at its healthiest state.  When you plan out your daily meals, write down how many servings from each food group you have every day.  Follow the food pyramid above.  After a few weeks of writing down your meal plans, you'll have a good idea of what to eat without having to pre-plan.  When dining out or making your own meals, imagine your plate to be divided into four sections.  Half of the plate should have vegetables.  1/4th of the plate should contain grains, and the other 1/4th should be your protein.  Ideally, you want a lean protein like fish or chicken, and you should keep it at the size of a deck of playing cards.  Breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day.  Assure that you have fiber and protein in your breakfast, since that's what will keep you full for longer.

Treat yourself
I ate dessert every single day when I lost weight.  The trick is to eat your treats in small amounts.  If you want ice cream, have a scoop.  Don't fill your bowl full.  Have you been craving pizza?  Give in and order.  But eat a bowl of salad before you dig in.  Ordering it with light cheese and extra veggies can make it a healthier choice.  Bottom line: if you're craving something "bad," then eat it, just in small portions.

Make simple changes
Small changes can make a huge difference.  Substitute regular salad dressings with light versions.  Try dropping down to 2% milk instead of whole milk.  Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread.  There are tons of swaps you can, and should, make that are healthier choices for you.  Take a look at "Eat This, Not That!  Thousands of  Simple Food Swaps that Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds--or More!" by David Zinczenko.  Click on the text to view the book on Amazon.com.

Mind your drinks
A Venti caramel frappuchino from Starbucks with whipped cream has 510 calories, 50% of your daily saturated fat, 20% of your daily cholesterol, and 81 grams of sugar.  A regular-sized Hershey's milk chocolate bar has 24 grams of sugar.  That means you could have had 3.4 Hershey's milk chocolate bars in place of that one Starbucks drink.  You don't have to get rid of Starbucks altogether, but it should be a treat you have every once in a while.  Instead of ordering a Venti caramel frappuchino with whipped cream, opt for  the healthier version, the 'skinny' caramel frappuchino which contains a sugar free syrup that has less calories and sugar, no whip cream, and also a drizzle of sugar free caramel.  At home, try to cut out soda.  Buy the small cans of soda to keep yourself from being tempted to drink the entire larger can.  If you drink whole milk, try drinking 2% milk.  If you add coffee creamer or half and half to your coffee at home, try adding some milk first so you won't have to use as much creamer.  Milk adds a creamier consistency to your coffee, and helps you retain some calcium that coffee takes from your body.  Watch out for fruit juices, too.  Most brands of juice add sugar or high fructose corn syrup.  Me and my husband are big fans of Odwalla or Naked juice.  It has 100% juice and no added sugar.  I love these with my breakfast, or as a mid-morning drink.  Overall, remember to drink tons of water to keep your body hydrated and operating at its best.  Add fresh lemon, lime, or cucumber to your water for taste.

Mind your food labels
Take a look at what you're putting into your body.  The quantity of ingredients are actually shown in order on the food label.  For instance, the ingredients shown on a Blue Machine Naked Juice are as follows: apple juice, banana puree, blueberry puree, fibersol-2 fiber (maltodextrin), blackberry puree, natural flavors, fruit and vegetable juice for color. . . .etc.  Since apple juice is the first ingredient on the list, it's the most abundant ingredient found in the juice.  Then banana puree, then blueberry puree, etc.  You want to stay away from foods that have added sugar, aspartame and Acesulfame-K (sugar substitutes linked to cancer), artificial colors (especially any red food coloring, also linked to some issues like A.D.D.), and any processed additives that you may be allergic to.  For desserts, I strongly suggest you use real sugar instead of sugar substitutes, even Splenda, as artificial sweeteners have a bad reputation for hurting your metabolism.  There are many research articles that you can find by simply searching Google for more information.

Don't count calories
I don't mean mindless stuff your face and take in 4,000 calories every day, but realize that some of the 'healthy' foods you may think to be beneficial to your body are not.  For example, I used to eat Yoplait yogurt every day.  I fell in love with their strawberry cheesecake flavor.  When I decided to eat healthier, I did some research and learned to look at food labels.  There are 170 calories in one cup of Yoplait strawberry cheesecake flavored yogurt, with 11% of your daily carbohydrates and a whopping 26 grams of sugar.  Whoa!  Learning this information, I went on a hunt to find healthier alternatives that didn't add sugar or contain so many calories.  I have been eating Fage 0% yogurt and Chobani 0% yogurt.  Both of these brands are Greek strained, so they are thicker and have more protein than your average cup of yogurt.  Also, there is no sugar added (avoid Fage's fruit-flavored cups) and they contain all natural ingredients.  I never looked at 'health' food the same until I took a peek at the label.  Just because it claims to be healthy, doesn't mean it's good for your body!  I made a lot of swaps for healthier alternatives that didn't slow me down by consuming extra calories and sugar.  Vegetables are always a great route to go down that are nutrient-dense and a very low calorie count.  Try eating raw carrots, broccoli and cauliflower and use light ranch as a dipping sauce.  You don't need to count your calories every day to figure out how much exercise you need to negate the calories you have consumed, just compare the foods you're eating now to other alternatives.  The main idea is to take in foods that will nourish your body.  By taking in the proper foods and not over-indulging, exercising, and drinking lots of water, you will notice an improvement in your body.  Basic body movements such as blinking, breathing, beating of the heart, and moving your fingers require energy, and therefore burn calories.  Do not run out and go grab a Big Mac now that I've told you that, because the amount of calories burned from basic body functions are minuscule.  But it's a fun tid-bit to be reminded of. ;)

Mix your exercise up
Switching to healthier food and drinking a lot of water will help you lose weight, but exercise will help get you to your goal faster and will get you toned.  When people hear the word "exercise," they cringe and say they don't like working out.  Working out doesn't necessarily mean you need to run on a treadmill, or hit the gym and pump iron.  Why not buy a rebounder and rebound to some energetic music, or pull some weeds out in the yard?  Go swimming, drive up to the mountains and take a scenic walk, dance to some of your favorite songs, play your Wii, try some yoga poses.  There are so many other ways to get fit and stay fit other than hitting the gym or running.  However, if you want to tone your body, you need to push yourself by doing cardio every other day and doing some sort of low-intensity, but key workout, to your exercise plan in between.  While losing weight, you should be doing some sort of routine five to six days a week, for at least one hour a day.  Cardio is a great way to both lose weight and get toned, and there are many forms of cardio exercise for you to enjoy.  Regardless of the form of exercise you choose, you must incorporate movement to stay fit.  When you are on the move, your lymph nodes excrete toxins from your body which help you stay healthy.  Click here for some fun exercise suggestions.

Starving yourself makes you gain weight
When you don't eat, your body reserves fat for you to survive off of.  Starving yourself is never the answer in losing, or maintaining, your weight.  Try eating several times a day in small portions.  As mentioned previously, I found that eating breakfast, a snack, lunch, a snack, dinner, a snack or dessert keeps me full and helped me lose weight, along with daily exercise.

Don't give up!
The most important thing to remember is that you're going to cave in and you're going to eat those extra few cookies that you shouldn't have.  Do not beat yourself up over it, and do not say, "I'll start over again tomorrow."  No!  If you're serious about losing weight, realize that it's a lot of hard work and dedication, and you can't be perfect all the time.  In fact, there is no such thing as perfection.  If you know you're going to crave candy, cookies, or chips, try putting the serving size in a baggie so you're not tempted to eat more from the container it came in.

Keep me posted on your progress and success stories.  You can do it!

Big Bear Adventure

I am pretty sure there's nothing worse than being caught in a slump.

You know, that mood where you don't feel like doing anything, or seeing anyone.  You go about your daily routine like a robot.  There comes a point in time where you need to snap out of it, sista!  Or brotha. . .whichever applies to you. ;)

For the past month, I have been in this horrific stage of blah-ness (I'm copyrighting that) where I felt like keeping my head down and plowing through the day.  Every day.  For a month.  I felt grumpy, irritated, and not myself at all!  I feel that it has something to do with our wedding being so spectacular. Going 'back to normal' was no fun after being showered with love and attention for half a week straight.  I also started eating a bunch of cake, cookies, and candy out of nowhere.  I don't know if I began eating what was on hand because of the time constraint between work and school, or if I was stressing over the wedding, but it was all so good!  But not so good for my body, or my mood.

When I experience these periods of blah, my husband and I like to call it being a "wah wah whale."  Simply put, it means you're being a big baby over nothing.  It's the nicer way of saying, "Please shut your yap, you're being very emotional."  As humans, we tend to experience this sort of thing every now and again.  That's okay, it's completely normal.  But when you feel that you're plowing through the days rather than enjoying them, do something out of the ordinary.  Shake it up, mix it up, put it in a blender.

My husband is a professional when it comes to doing spur of the moment things.  He called me Friday while I am at work and asks me, "Hey!  Want to head up to Big Bear and spend the night in a cabin with some friends?"  Me + outdoors + a cute little town with shopping + snow = OH YEAH I'M DOWN!  And so I got off work, get all bundled up for the snowy weather and off we went on an hour drive to Big Bear.  The town still had Christmas lights up and it is very possibly the cutest little place I will ever be in my entire life.  It's so quiet, the air is crisp and fresh.  The people are so nice there!  Well, we get to our cabin and it kinda looks and smells like what a great grandmother's house would look and smell like.  Some things needed fixing and the wallpaper was peeling.  But that's okay, we just needed a place to crash after our adventure for the night.

And boy, it certainly was an adventure.  We walked around the village looking at all the neat places they had.  Of course we had to trot around in the snow, make some very odd-shaped snowballs, and smash ice with our boots.  We were trying to find a coffee shop so I could get my hands on a delicious latte, but at 9:00 at night most places were closed.  And then we spotted it!  A staple the four of us friends knew and loved dearly: Jack in the Box!  We headed inside for some snacks and a few refills of coffee before we headed back out into the 15 degree weather.  We ended up at a place called Bowling Barn that was a two story ginormous barn.  We had some more snacks and beer, and bowled terribly, but we had tons of fun!  It was about midnight when we walked over to Big Bear lake.  We couldn't see anything since it was so dark, other than a huge pile of ducks all huddled together to stay warm.  We walked back to our 'cabin' and knocked out.  We headed back home in the morning after eating breakfast.

It was a short trip, but it was much needed.  It got me out of my rut!  Breathing in that fresh, crisp air and walking around aimlessly having a good time made me feel so happy to be alive.

As I've said before, it really is the small things in life that can make such a big difference.  It's also the people in your life who aid you in your journeys that make life fun.  Thanks to my husband and our friends for putting together a very fun last minute trip.  Next time, we're getting there earlier so I can shop at all the cute stores!

PSSST!  You can click on these images to make them larger.

This is the view we had when we woke up in the morning and stepped out of our cabin.  You can see snow on the ground and Big Bear lake behind the houses.

As we exit the village area driving home, we saw an island in the middle of a small body of water.  These were some of the beautiful houses surrounding the water.  Notice that the lake is frozen!

Since it was so dark out, I wasn't able to get any pictures of The Village, so I got this one from online.  This is exactly how it looked when we were there.  How adorable!  There's lots of places to shop, eat, get a massage or your nails done.  It's the perfect little place.

Me looking very yucky in my scrub bottoms from work haha, my darling husband and our good friend Jorge at the bowling alley.

The boys looking spiffy at the bowling alley!  Ramiro, Karl, and Jorge.

The boys being, well, boys!  This is in our little 'cabin.'  Jorge has his astronaut suit on and Karl is just being ridiculous with his beer bottle haha.  All I know is I was cold and tired!
